Modern Day Apologetics: “Friends, I apologize for what the Bible says about sin and wrath and judgement… I prefer to think happy thoughts.”
You might be interested to know, Pilgrim, that I believe there is a sin unto death… and touching my toupee is one of them.
I found this piece of satire at Ken’s www.apprising.org site and found it hilarious. It points out a serious issue very effectively. We cannot claim Jesus while continuing to revel in our sin.
Paul addressed this issue in Romans and 1st Corinthians. Christians do not continue to drink iniquity as if it were water (regardless of whether it is bottled or tap). So, the idea of thieves continuing to steal after “becoming Christians” is absurd.
You may be wondering why the truth man would bring up such an elementary principle. The answer is that people need to hear this! Search the Emergents and liberal denominations and you will find homosexuals and heterosexual fornicators being welcomed into their assemblies and even pulpits! And what makes this worse is the continuing practice of sin goes right along for the ride!
And what about other sins? Look at the Barna and FOTF research that indicates that virtually the same behavior goes on in the lives of those who call themselves Christian as those who do not. So should we continue to sin that grace may abound?
Where does the madness stop? Can real Christians continue to sin as if nothing has changed in their lives spiritually? I say no because I believe the Bible says no. The Bible teaches that those who are saved are transformed. They become new creatures. They are conformed to the image of Christ over time. They repent and grow out of their desire to sin.
No one is saying that Christians suddenly and perfectly stop sinning. However, it is ridiculous to say that Christians continue to live as if nothing significant happened to them when they were saved. It is not valid hermeneutics to suddenly redefine a sin into a non-sin.
So think carefully before you go around telling people to “just be you” and that “God wired you a certain way because that is how He wants you to be” because such talk can be recklessly misleading. Check what the Bible teaches about sin. You will come away with a different perspective than the one in the cartoon above…
In early 1977, the rock&roll group The Eagles released what is recognized as the greatest recording effort of their career. The album titled “Hotel California” contained a single by the same name and it was a monster hit to say the least. Written in a minor key, it has a somewhat eery feel to it with lyrics that are fittingly dark and mysterious. Some people claim that the lyrics talk about the band selling their souls to the devil for fame and fortune ala Robert Johnson.
As is usually the case, the truth is nowhere near as dark and sinister. The band did indeed have a secret, a big secret. They were known as a Southern California band but actually none of them lived there! Don Felder, then lead guitarist, tells about how they would all drive into LA very early in the morning to avoid being discovered as non-locals whenever they were rehearsing or recording. During these early morning drives, several ideas for songs were hatched.
In too many churches today there is also a big secret being kept. That secret is that God is just and sovereign. He can and will punish wickedness. He will cast everything evil into the lake of fire one day. Everyone whose name is not found in the Lamb’s Book of Life will be cast into it along with the devil, antiChrist, the false prophet and all demons.
Today, this is a well-kept secret. When is the last time you heard hell, punishment, damnation, justice, or the lake of fire talked about in your church? Believe me, Jesus spoke of these items often. The Bible deals with these sufficiently so that we can know that no metaphor or hyperbole is intended. Hell is real and you do not want to go there.
How can it be avoided? Jesus Christ set aside His position in Heaven temporarily and came to earth via a virgin birth. He lived on earth for 33 years. He ministered, taught, laughed, cried, and lived among friends and enemies. He was crucified by His own choice and by His own design in order to pay the price for the sins of all who would be redeemed. He gave up His life; no one took it from Him. He was buried in a donated tomb. He rose on the third day as He had said he would do. He then visited with His followers for a short while and ascended into Heaven assuming His rightful place at the right hand of the Father and sent the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers.
Truth is truth. Anything less is not…
Call upon Him today. He is your only hope.
Emergents and liberals all talk the talk of love but do they walk the walk of love? Love, love, love and so it goes. We love each other so we don’t judge each other. We are not constrained by laws and rules, we just love. On and on and on it goes… But is it true?
According to surveys from reputable researchers, Emergents and liberals (as well as too many who claim to be traditional) fornicate almost as much as nonChristians, lie almost as much, steal almost as much, partake in alcohol & drugs almost as much, use worldly entertainment almost as much, and attend church almost as little. They also fail to honor God by not believing His word to be inerrant and infallible almost in equal percentages.
So, let’s just round it off by saying there is practically no difference between many who call themselves Christian and those who do not claim any association with Christ. Most of the Emergents and liberals today claim outright that they do not follow the rules of traditional beliefs. They openly rebel against traditional Biblical belief. They hide behind excuses like the Bible being too difficult to understand and not wanting to turn people away by clinging to rules and commandments.
Since little if any attempt is made by them to follow God’s law, we can assume by deduction that they do not really love anyone but themselves. Emergents and liberals only love numero uno. They love themselves. How could someone who loves his neighbor fornicate with them? This not only uses the other person for pleasure but also induces another to sin against God. Is this love? Hardly.
What about stealing from strangers and stores? Does this show love? No. What about lying? No love. What about the rebellion they show against their Christian counterparts? Not love either. What about the lust and coveting they show by their drive to attain all of the world’s power and prestige? Also not loving.
Not to mention their showing no love for God by breaking all of His laws continually…
Emergents and liberals do not love one another. It is simply noise. They use this love talk to quiet their consciences. Repent and cry out to God for salvation.
Many movies, books, plays, and games have dealt with the subject of what would happen if you could go back and do your life over again. I can think of at least a dozen things I would do differently. But, really, would your life be different today if you had restarted it and came through a 2nd time?
I say no, it would not be any different at all … at least not for the better. Oh, you may have bought into Microsoft back in the early 80s and became a gazillionaire but that would only have allowed you more money to further debauch yourself. Here is how I got there…
A tiger cannot change his stripes. Proverbs says this (only in a much better way). Only God can cause flesh to appear on dry bones. Only God can save a soul. Despite making good TV, a second chance in life would result the same way as the first chance unless God intervened. Only God can save a soul. And without eternal salvation, what difference would it make if you have 12 chances to re-live part of your life?
For 2010, let’s get back to the future. Eternity lasts a really long time… Do not enter it without being covered by the blood of Jesus.
