Daily Truth Bible Study Acts 4:23-37
The text for today is Acts 4: 23 – 37. Let’s begin the study…
In our last study, Peter and John had been arrested, commanded not to speak or preach in Jesus’ name, threatened, and told to leave. Today’s text finds them returning to the other disciples and converts and reporting about the events that transpired.
Upon hearing all of the things that happened, the group of believers began to pray to God. They asked for protection for their lives, well-being for their Lexus, Rolex, 401K, and so forth…NOT. Watch what they pray about. They pray to God acknowledging that God is the sovereign creator and ruler, that He is sovereign over all things including the actions of the enemy, and stating the facts of what Peter and John witnessed from the political and religious rulers. Then they ask for boldness to speak God’s word and for the ability to do signs and wonders in the name of Jesus. They did not ask for food, clothing, personal protection, well-being, a new church building…they only asked for boldness and the power of God to be displayed.
What was the result? Verse 31 says that after they prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke boldly.
When is the last time you were in a meeting where the building was shaken?
You probably answer like me, it has not happened at all or in a very long time. Why is that? Probably because we are more concerned with our lives, our possessions, our plans, our goals, our ministry, our wants and desires, and our grandiose purpose in this life.
I’m not saying we are all bad people with no concern for doing God’s will. I am saying, however, that we are probably too much in this world to be worthy of being shaken by the rush of a renewing charge from the Spirit of God.
I believe this text should encourage us to step back and examine ourselves. The disciples were only concerned about pleasing God and fulfilling His plan. We are concerned about preserving our lives and way of life. Each one of us should get alone with God and ask for Him to show us the way.
May God bless the study of His word.
