I Have a Question on the Campus Crusade for Christ to Cru Change (Opinion)

07 Aug

I have noticed that not very many blogs have addressed the topic of Campus Crusade for Christ changing their name to Cru so as not to offend. Why is this? I’m not sure.

Anyhoo, here is my take. Are they bad folks? Probably not. Is it wrong for them to do ministry under a new name? No. Did they fumble the ball when trying to do PR about their name change? ABSOLUTELY.

Here is how I got there. They whole info download about their decision to change their name smelled like low tide at the docks. Their spokesman said they changed their name because Campus and Crusade were causing them problems when trying to minister to people. I have two major problems with this.

1) If Campus and Crusade were the offenders, then why did they leave out Christ? (cue the crickets) There is no answer other than maybe they simply forgot to include Christ when they coined a new name. Probably not that one. So was it really Christ that was the offender and they were too lily-livered to admit it? This is what I fear is the correct answer. I hope I am wrong.

2) When choosing a new name sans Campus and Crusade (and Christ for that matter), why on earth would they choose Cru? This makes no sense whatsoever. Cru is simply short for crusade… Duh!

There are several possibilities as to why things happened the way they did. The one I fear is their leadership may have been taught and/or influenced by the pragmatic seeker friendly and Emergent under tow that has captivated the apostate church.

Many, many folks have been influenced by the potentates of pragmatism. You will catch more flies with honey than vinegar is the common thought. Hogwash! You are not catching anything. If people are being caught so to speak for God’s kingdom, He is doing it. Your pragmatic showmanship and Drucker-styled leadership isn’t doing a thing but deceiving you if you are on the pragmatic bus.

How on earth or in Heaven can you better represent Christ without His name than with it? SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION FOR ME.

And when you answer, please quote God and not Rick Warren, Robert Schuler, or Brian McLaren…  I’ll be waiting.

Well said, with a dash of humor. (Love the crickets)

    1. Campus Crusade’s BIGGEST error happend a long time ago when they put their “ministry’s” large “praise” gathering on a Sunday on a par with the God ordained worship service of the institutional church. (You know. The one that Christ instituted.) That put CCFC in competition with the Lord of Glory.

    2. And does anyone else remember the time in Seattle, about 16 years ago? When Bill Bright sat across the table from RC Sproul and Michael Horton and castigated them for spreading their Reformed doctrines. Bright warned them that God would hold them personally accountable for sending millions of souls to hell.

(Sources: 1. My pastor, Rev. Tom Morrison (URCNA), formerly on staff with Campus Crusade. 2. I heard this on the White Horse Inn on the next broadcast after the incident.)

So a move toward pragmatism may indeed be the problem. Sad. Thanks for the info, Craig.

A dear friend, a feisty 80 year old, called “Cru” and told them she was withdrawing her support because of the name change. The poor guy on the other end told her they had been using the name for years. When she asked him what it meant, he couldn’t give an answer. He tried using the excuse of the apostle Paul with the unknown god. She told him point blank that Paul was not ashamed of the name of Christ, and if they chose to use worldly bait-and-switch, they could do so without her support.

Thanks for your comment. This idea that “we can do more without the name of Christ than with it” is absurd. Cru is not the first to try this. It is at the core of American pragmatism. I have even heard pastors say that they “reach” people by downplaying the divisive stuff (Christ and Him crucified for our sins to redeem us) and insert the Christ piece later. I asked exactly when and how the “Christ piece” gets inserted and it never did. It was all smoke & mirrors.

When you get a crowd by being worldly, you have to continue to be worldly in order to keep them. Christ said of Himself that He offends. Also, people are not saved by our MBA-styled marketing programs.

      Thanks for joining the discussion.

Bill Bright was an endorser of the 1994 document Evangelicals and Catholics Together. And you wonder why CCFC chose Cru in lieu of Christ…? Enough said.

I am not a fan of ecumenical gatherings among those who are not of the same faith either. This all goes along with the idea that CCCI fell to pragmatism some time ago, no?

Thanks for commenting, CarolynB. Visit again.

Yes, my point was that if you investigate ministries/preachers who are deviating from the truth today, and look back into their past, you very often find that they were also off the mark long ago.

When it comes to ecumenicalism, the core problem is the utter disobedience to the word of God. Yoking in spiritual endeavors with those who teach a different “gospel” is a very serious sin, and greatly offends Christ.

Thanks for standing for the truth, Tru.
