Daily Truth Bible Study Acts 2:22-47

Our text for today’s message is Acts 2: 22 – 47. Now, let’s begin…

Remember from yesterday’s lesson that Peter stood up among the other eleven and began talking to the crowd. First, he clarified about the disciples speaking in different languages as the result of them being filled with the Holy Spirit and reminded the listeners of the words of the prophet Joel who predicted such miraculous signs and wonders at the outpouring of God’s Spirit.

Then, Peter began preaching about Jesus’ authenticity as Messiah because of the proof God gave via the signs, miracles, and wonders done by Jesus. Peter continued by tossing a doctrinal nugget their way that surely surprised them, “…Him being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death because it was not possible that He should be held by it (because He is God)- added by me for clarification.

I bet you could have knocked them over with a spaghetti noodle. I would imagine the crowd had grown quite large due to the sight and sounds of the commotion mentioned in 2:1-21. Now, these people, who were watching in amazement and curiosity, heard the truth about Jesus being sent as God from God, having been killed by design of God, the guilt belonging to them, and Jesus being raised because he could not be held by death. Wow! What an ear full…

As a side note, notice how Peter was not afraid of ‘turning away the crowd with too much truth and convicting preaching’ like so many are today. Peter did not tell the crowd, “Jesus loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life…Who wants to ask Jesus into your heart?” Peter told the people the cold, hard truth.

Moi? I would bet some of the people said, “Who, me?” when Peter mentioned the part about the guilt being theirs. Let’s face it. We are all guilty of the blood of Christ. His blood was shed for all who are saved. He paid a debt He did not owe to relieve a debt we owed but could not pay…

Peter went on to prove how the most revered King David had prophesized about the Messiah and Jesus was indeed Him. He tied David’s words into the modern day because the words definitely applied. If something is true yesterday (concerning an eternal, unchangeable God), it will be true today and tomorrow.

Verse 37 says the people were ‘cut to the heart’ when they heard this. The Greek text uses a word that means to pierce or stab. Apparently this was a sudden and unmistakable happening. Notice the reaction of the crowd. They asked Peter and the disciples, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Wow, not an alter call, communication card, or survey went out. The people were convicted and wanted to know how to make it right is the implication.

OK, so when the truth of our guilt is told to us in a way that we can understand, it produces conviction. With conviction being present, the opportunity for results will be there. If preachers tell amusing stories and entertain with jokes, drama, and scatter-brained monologues about pop-psychology topics, how will anyone be convicted of their sin? How will they even know sin exists?

Peter goes on to tell them to repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and they would receive the Holy Spirit. This promise extends to all…to as many as God will call. Verse 40 says that with many other words Peter testified and exhorted them including a command for them to be saved from their perverse generation. One side note to be mentioned here. To be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ was a dangerous thing in those days just like it is today in some parts of the world. However, despite temporary danger, Jesus Christ is the source of our salvation, not the water, the building, the preacher, …etc.

The text then tells us that ‘those who gladly received his word (Peter’s sermon) were baptized’. And that day, 3000 souls were added to them (the disciples)…and they continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrinal teachings, fellowship with other believers, breaking of bread together, and prayers.

The last part of verse 47 says that God added to the church daily with those who were being saved. So, God builds His church! It’s not our cleverness that does it…who would have known?  So today’s pastors do not need MBA degrees afterall? Apparently we need only to be faithful to God and carry out His commands. God will take care of the rest.

May God bless the study of His word.
